Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin turns 15

  • 992 events with more 18,1 million visitors since 2008
  • 192 events during a 12 month period 2022/23

Berlin – 15 years ago, on September 10, 2008, today’s Mercedes-Benz Arena was ceremoniously opened. Since then, the operator of the arena, Anschutz Entertainment Group Operations GmbH, has welcomed more than 18.1 million guests at 1,992 events. During this time, numerous national and international stars of the music industry, spectacular shows and major international sporting events have brought unforgetable moments to the arena.

Ole Hertel, Vice President and Managing Director Anschutz Entertainment Group Operations GmbH: “15 years Mercedes-Benz Arena means 15 years with many highlights and unforgettable moments. We like to thank all the artists who have performed with us, the concert promoters, our partners, the sports teams, service-providing companies and, of course, all our employees who have made the Arena’s continuing success story possible. Because one thing is certain: a cosmopolitan city like Berlin would no longer be imaginable without an event venue of this size and quality.

We will continue to strive to provide the ideal setting for top-class entertainment in the future. In the past twelve months, we have seen how people are drawn to unique live experiences. That’s why we’re looking forward to the next 15 years with excitement and optimism, despite all the current and certainly future challenges.”

Event-rich return

Oviously, the Mercedes-Benz Arena did not run at full capacity for the entire 15 years of its existence. More than two years of pandemic left the arena’s public operations largely dormant. After all restrictions were lifted, the resulting event backlog then made for the most intensive phase in 15 years of the Arena. During the twelve-month period from the beginning of July 2022 to the end of June 2023, 192 events took place in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

For the opening of the arena, Metallica (Sept. 12), Herbert Grönemeyer (Sept. 13) and Coldplay (Sept. 15) played in succession, complemented by the 11-0 home debut victory of the Eisbären Berlin on Sept. 14. This opening weekend set the pace for the arena for the next 15 years.
